Your heater and your air conditioning share a car. The heater runs off engine coolant; the A/C runs off a sealed refrigerant loop. When either one quits, the fix depends entirely on which part of that system failed — and a shop that guesses is a shop that charges you twice.

Our A/C diagnosis is half price with an approved repair. It is not a sniff test. We test the system for proper operation, record the vent temperature, gauge and record pressures on both the high and low side, and inspect the visible components for oil traces — refrigerant carries oil with it, so a leak usually leaves a mark.
If pressures point at a leak we find it before we recharge anything. Adding refrigerant to a leaking system is the automotive equivalent of filling a bucket with a hole in it, and it is why so many people end up paying for the same recharge every spring.

Because it has a leak. Refrigerant is in a sealed loop and is not consumed the way oil or fuel is. If the level drops, it is escaping somewhere — usually an O-ring, a hose crimp or the compressor shaft seal. An annual top-off treats the symptom and costs more over three years than finding the leak once.

Almost always a blend door actuator on a dual-zone system — a small motor that stops moving. It often announces itself with a clicking sound behind the dash. Not expensive to diagnose, and the repair cost depends entirely on how buried the actuator is.
It is usually the cheaper time to do it, and every A/C system should be run periodically through the winter anyway to keep the seals lubricated. If you already know it is broken, fixing it in February means not sitting in a shop queue in July.
Yes, with an important caveat: many hybrids and EVs use an electrically driven compressor running high voltage, and those require different refrigerant oil and different safety procedure. That is not a job for a general quick-service shop. See hybrid repair.
